The Sami belong to four nation-states: Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway. They live in the northern parts of these countries in the area called the North Calotte. In the North Calotte, the Sami have long exploited natural resources. Originally, they lived by hunting, trapping and fishing. They were a hunter-gatherer people, but as time went on, it became more difficult to make a living in the old way. The Sami had to seek new forms of livelihood. Some settled on the coasts or in the forest villages in the interior. Others began to keep larger herds of domesticated reindeer that they followed on their annual migration between the high mountains and the coast.

Harrong showed everyday glimpses of Sami life like few others.
